The U.S. federal Credit for Increasing Research Activities under Internal Revenue Code §41.
IRC Section 41 provides a U.S. federal credit for increasing research activities, calculated on qualified research expenses above a base amount. Taxpayers may use the regular credit method or the Alternative Simplified Credit. Eligible small businesses may apply a portion against payroll taxes under applicable rules. Activities must meet the statutory four-part test. State research credits often piggyback on similar concepts but have their own statutes.
